Library 2020 Symposium - the future of library collaboration in BC

last modified 2007-10-29 10:01

Leaders from the public, academic and school library communities came together on October 22, 2007 for a day of visioning and celebration for the BC library community.

Thank you to all of you who were able to join us for this historic day as we gathered library and community decision makers to identify new opportunities for collaboration among BC’s library sectors.

Recent developments in BC libraries, including the current PLSB and BC ELN strategic plans, have set the stage for further discussion about how we can create seamless services for the people of the province that include libraries of all types and sizes.

Speaker presentations explored the need for a continuum of libraries as a support to lifelong learning, and how other Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions have achieved this goal.  Particpants from all parts of the library community engaged in visioning and group discussions to identify user needs, issues and next steps in building an integrated, province-wide library service.

Shirley Bond, Deputy Premier and Minister of Education sent a letter to all participants with her best wishes for the day.

Next Steps...

The symposium planning group met on Oct 23 to begin to map out immediate next steps - communication and engagement strategies for determining where we go next in shaping the BC Library. Once the symposium proceedings are available to document all of the valuable discussions that took place, we will have a better idea of the direction the library community would like this to take.

All follow-up from the Library 2020 Symposium will be posted on in the Next Steps... section of the website - please check back regularly for updates.

This is just the beginning of the conversation...
